The Day Pigs Flew

The students arrived at the school excited, enthusiastic and a tiny bit tired. We took the bus to "Il Était Une Fois Une Petite Colonie" where we experienced what it was like to live in a farmhouse in the 1800s. Some of the highlights were the various animals, the schoolhouse and the farm house.

Next, it was off to La Cabane à sucre where we ate till we rolled out the door. Students tried, and enjoyed, many different foods, including des oreilles de Christ, des crotons and des pets de soeurs, all drenched in maple syrup, of course!

After lunch, we walked to Arbraska where we harnessed up and swung from the trees. Here, some students learned to negotiate their fears while others seemed fearless. Everyone encouraged everyone else and collaborated together. The students were very supportive of each others efforts and thresholds.

We gathered in our buses for the ride back to the school content and sleepy. As we arrived at school, the host families were there again to greet us and take the students home.

Dear Genevieve and all you other wonderful teachers. Thanks for taking so much time to document the trip and their kids and for taking time at the end of the long day to download them. I especially loved the pictures of Arbraska. What a momento.

But I must ask - what on earth are "oreilles de Christ" (are they legal??) and "pets des soeurs?"

Can't wait to see tomorrow's blog.

  3. "Les oreilles de Christ" are some kind of bacon or lard strips that have been (I think) deep fried until they are hard as rock. It took some work to convince one of the students that he didn't actually chip his tooth on one!

"Pets de soeurs" (lit. nun's toots!) are the little round desserts you see in the photo of my dessert plate. They look like the mini-cinnamon buns you can get at Costco, but they're maple flavoured.

I'm so glad you like the blog and photos! (still sorting today's take)

  5. The sugar shack was really yummy (the food!).
Abraska was amazing! It was really scary at first...I started with the hadest and highest one which was really fun. The scariest part was the zipline for me!
