We spent our last day as guests of the residents of LaPrairie and l'École Émilie-Gamelin. Our hosts invited us for breakfast in the school cafeteria, where we ate and laughed together, and then signed T-shirts for eachother.
Following this, the very large group was split into to two, to spend a couple of hours at the local (best) mini-putt, followed by lunch and ice cream. We then enjoyed a guided walking tour about the vieux LaPrairie, which included a visit to the first church of the region (visible from the Stade Olympique because of its height) complete with stories of bones surfacing due to the yearly spring floods in the old graveyard, and a sneak peak at the old catacombs under the church.
Our joint day culminated at a bonbon shop where the students were delighted to taste old-fashioned candies, before walking back to school for our final goodbyes, and boarding the waiting school buses which would take us to the airport.
Our flight back home was peaceful and content. Students worked in their livrets d'échange, watched in-flight entertainment, and chatted quietly about their busy week. The three girls sitting in front of me had the special privilege of being constantly pestered by yours truly every time the geography changed as we overflew the country westward. They smilingly took it in good part, and even oooh'ed and aaaah'ed along with me when we saw the magnificent Rocky mountains, signaling the nearing end of our journey.
